Today’s most important environmental issue is of course climate change. Many of people and international organizations are concerned about it. The facts and expectations are not very positive if we will continue like this. As everybody knows, average temperature of the earth is increasing year by year. There are some actions that countries are taking, or not taking.
Kyoto Protocol has not been signed yet by all countries on the world. In the first step we have USA that has no intention to intention to ratify the Protocol. Also we have undecided countries like Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan and so on. Among these facts, there are 2 states that should be focused on especially. First one is USA that emits the biggest ratio of greenhouse gases. And there is an EU-candidate Turkey. George Bush can say that Kyoto Protocol is expensive but I believe that USA has the potential to afford it to slow down the effects of global warming. If other highly industrialized countries are ratifying Kyoto Protocol, USA should do the same. On the other hand, Turkey, candidate of EU which that EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn says “Turkey could join the European Union in 10 to 15 years” about. I think a candidate country should sign and ratify the Protocol. However, as Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkanende said, Kyoto Protocol is not enough alone. These efforts will only slow down the effects of climate change but they wont stop climate change. Beyond the Kyoto Protocol, countries have to be prepared to adaption to the effects of climate change. Cengiz Bozkurt Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi
